Smile… For The End Of Sugar, But The Beginning Of Chocolate Cake!

We promise we are going to talk about chocolate cake in this blog post, but before we do we want to talk a little bit about sugar.

Sugar in our diet is now thought to be one of the primary causes of heart disease and diabetes and is largely responsible for the rising levels of obesity in the western world. It is also the cause of tooth decay and a common cause of tooth loss in both children and adults.

This is entirely preventable.

Tooth decay occurs when sugar is taken in by bacteria in the plaque in your mouth which produces an acid which then softens the enamel and dentine in your teeth. If this occurs only occasionally and you are brushing your teeth well with a toothpaste which contains fluoride then your teeth can recover from this. However, if this occurs multiple times throughout the day then tooth decay can develop which will require treatment from your dentist.

Many types of carbohydrates can cause tooth decay but refined sugar causes the most damage.

Some simple dietary advice to prevent tooth decay involves:

  1. Reducing total sugar intake
  2. Limiting sugar to meal times only
  3. Ideally mainly drink water or milk (especially in-between meals)
  4. Healthy snacks in-between meals
  5. High sugar content fizzy drinks or cordials have no place in a healthy diet and should   only be drunk very occasionally if at all
  6.  If you do eat a sugary snack either brush your teeth or chew sugar-free gum (to promote saliva production)

Of course, it is easier said than done. Sugar is addictive. We live in a world of convenience food where the majority of pre-prepared foods have added (hidden) sugar in it. So in reality we will probably not resolve this problem until the food manufacturers get on board and supply us with healthier/ lower sugar alternatives.

Sugar can be known by over 50 names, for example, dextrose, fructose and sucrose are all sugars and the higher up the list of ingredients they are listed the higher the sugar content.

Hidden sugars are often found in yoghurts, cereal bars, and various types of juice along with many other pre-prepared foods.

How do we know how much sugar we are eating?

Current research is suggesting that if we keep our sugar intake below 10% of calorie intake then there is ‘moderate quality’ evidence to show a lower risk of dental decay, so to help, we thought we’d give a rough guide to the amount of sugar contained within various foodstuffs so that you can be sure to keep your intake ideally less than 10%.

  • A can of Coke contains approximately 11 spoonfuls of sugar increasing to 28 spoonfuls in the largest bottle
  • A McDonald’s Coke also contains 28 spoonfuls of sugar
  • A tub of Haagen Das ice cream contains 21 spoonfuls of sugar
  • The average chocolate bar contains around 10 spoonfuls of sugar
  • One breakfast pop tarts contain approximately 4 1/2 spoonfuls of sugar
  • One bowl of frosted cornflakes contains 6 spoonfuls of sugar
  • One NutriGrain Contains 3 1/2 spoonfuls of sugar
  • A Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino contains 12 spoonfuls of sugar
  • A McDonald’s Medium chocolate milkshake contains 28 spoonfuls of sugar

You may think that chocolate cake is loaded with sugar and isn’t really the right thing to add to this kind of blog post, but in this instance, you’d be wrong. We scoured the Internet and found an excellent recipe for sugar-free chocolate cake, So here it is… Your chance to begin a lower-sugar lifestyle and still indulge in the wonderful things of life.

The Recipe

  • 1 cup of soft butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of sifted flour
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • 4oz of melted unsweetened bakers chocolate
  • 1 ½ cup of agave
  • ½ cup coconut milk
  • 1 tsp stevia
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ¼ tsp baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cup of cocoa


  1. Begin to cream the butter while melting the chocolate on low heat.
  2. Once our chocolate is fully melted, throw it in with your butter. Cream butter and chocolate together until completely combined as one.
  3. Add in agave, eggs, vanilla and warmed coconut milk (throw it in the microwave for about 45 seconds).
  4. Dry ingredients: start by adding your coco to the wet mix. Let that all mix together then toss in your flour mix (which will consist of flour, stevia, baking soda and salt, already mixed together).
  5. Even out the batter to two 8×6 pans, or whichever size you prefer, this recipe can also be used for cupcakes!
  6. Bake at 350 for 15-25 min. Test with a toothpick, if it comes out clean, let it cool in the pan for about 5 min then get that baby on a cooling rack until fully cooled.
  7. Try not to overcook the cake or it will be dry!
